$20,000 donation helps Bears of Hope deliver vital support

In April, Winslow asked employees to nominate a charity that was close to their hearts and that had made a difference to their lives to be the recipient of a $20,000 donation via the Allenby Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Winslow Group created to help those who need it, particularly those that align with Winslow family values.

After careful consideration, Winslow is donating $20,000 to Bears of Hope, following a deeply moving nomination from Winslow Constructors Junior Foreman Angelo, who shared the story of losing his son, Julius, and the compassion his family received during their darkest moments.

This story reminds us that behind every office, every project and every team there are people that continue to “show up” despite experiencing significant hardship demonstrating deep resilience and strength.

In January 2026, at 23 weeks pregnant, just two days after a routine ultrasound that showed their baby was developing normally, Angelo’s partner Nyssa unexpectedly went into labour late one evening. With their three-year-old daughter asleep in the car, the couple rushed towards the nearest hospital, more than 30km away.

During the drive, Nyssa's waters broke and baby Julius was born prematurely in the passenger seat before they reached medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors, midwives and paediatric specialists, Julius could not be saved.

In the midst of unimaginable grief, Angelo and his family found comfort through Bears of Hope, which provides free support services to families affected by miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss.

Reflecting on his experience, Angelo said that while the pain of losing Julius will never disappear, Bears of Hope brought compassion and humanity when it was needed most.

Bears of Hope’s support also includes grief counselling, peer support, facilitated support groups, sibling and parent grief workshops, parent support weekends, memorial services and practical resources.

The organisation works alongside hospitals and healthcare professionals to ensure grieving families receive compassionate care and support during some of life's most difficult moments.

The need for that support is significant. Every day, Australian families experience the heartbreak of miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss. Bears of Hope helps ensure those families know they are not alone.

“Winslow is honoured to support Bears of Hope through this $20,000 donation and to recognise the extraordinary work the organisation does for families across Australia,” said Winslow Chief Operating Officer, Construction Stephen Strano.

“We also thank Angelo for the courage it took to share such a deeply personal story. By speaking openly about Julius, he has not only honoured his son's memory, but has also shone a light on an organisation that provides hope, comfort and compassion to thousands of families facing unimaginable loss.”

Bears of Hope thanked Angelo and Winslow for recognising the organisation, saying the $20,000 donation will enable it to continue delivering vital support services during a financially challenging time for many Australian families.

The funding will help provide counselling sessions, facilitated support groups, peer support, grief workshops for parents and siblings, parent support weekends and resources, ensuring families can access these services at no personal financial cost while navigating the loss of their baby.

The organisation said it deeply appreciated Winslow's commitment to supporting parents and their wellbeing during one of the most devastating experiences a family can face.
